Challenges facing our marine industry today include; climate change; environmental stewardship and sustainability; marine safety and security; human resources and new market development. Bestowed upon a business or an organization, this award recognizes demonstrated leadership and innovation in one or more of these areas and the organization’s long-term impact on the industry.

Industry Lifetime Achievement Award


This individual stands out among many for consistent leadership and outstanding contributions. These contributions have been within operations in his or her direct charge, within the industry as a whole and/or within the communities in which he or she has lived and operated. This person is a change-agent who has demonstrated throughout his or her lifetime the passion to challenge the status quo to the benefit of many. He or she may or may not be a big personality; what is certain is that he or she is a proven big thinker with a big heart.

Award of Historical Marine Significance


This award is given to acknowledge and celebrate our rich marine history. The recipient may be an individual, organization or community. Honorees may be recognized for a singular accomplishment that can now be seen as having turned the tides of our history or for long-term dedication to positive change. Representing the strengths upon which our unique culture and sense of place are built, their stories are a part of our lesser known history and deserve wider recognition and a place in the public consciousness.

Nominees will be evaluated/ranked on the following criterias

Industry Leadership and Excellence Award


 

  1. This organization is a leader in their industry/sector. 
  2. This organization is a strong external ambassador/advocate for their industry/sector. 
  3. This organization is an innovator and industry builder finding new markets and/ or ways to create value. 
  4. This organization has had a game changing impact on the industry/sector. 
  5. This organization is a responsible leader in health, safety and environmental protection. 
  6. This organization is a respected employer and invests in its personnel. 
  7. This organization demonstrates a high level of ethical behaviour.
  8. This organization is a good corporate citizen giving back financially and otherwise to their community. 
  9. This organization has demonstrated a strong commitment to the economic success of this province.
  10. This is the right time in this organizations’ evolution to be acknowledging their impact.

  1. This is not a well know story in Newfoundland and Labrador and/or not well understood for its impact. 
  2. This has had a significant positive impact our history and culture. 
  3. This caused a significant directional shift in the future of our province economically or otherwise. 
  4. That impact persists to this day. (Legacy aspect)
  5. The story adds a new and/or unique dimension to the interpretion of our history and our culture. 
  6. This story speaks to our character and resourcefulness as a people. 
  7. The story has an interesting external dimension involving our relationship with another place or country. 
  8. The story’s impact is of national historic importance. 
  9. It is particularly important at this time (maybe a milstone or a sense of urgency) to shine a light on this story.

Our marine industry is broadly considered to include these overlapping sectors: Shipping and Ferry Transportation, Maritime Logistics, Commercial Services, Science and Technology, Marine Safety and Security, Naval and Defense, Offshore Industries, Ports and Terminals; Fishing and Fish Processing and Marine Education and Training.

The historic significance could also be related to a longer-term activity that has positively impacted our history and culture. Reflecting the strengths that have led to our unique culture and sense of place, the story may be part of our lesser known history and/or known but deserving of wider understanding and recognition.
